How To Request A New IP Address From Your ISP

What is the most efficient way to generate a new external IP address from my ISP? -

I get variations on this question often. I'll tell you what to try:

1. Click Start
2. Click run
3. In the run box type cmd.exe and click OK
4. When the command prompt opens type the following: *Press 'enter' after each new line.

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
exit

5. Erase your cookies in whatever browser you are using.

Frequently you will be assigned a new IP address when this happens. Sometime you will, sometimes you will not. If you are on a fixed IP address, this method will not work. If this works for you, you may want to save the above commands into a batch file, and just run it when you need it.

10 Steps to E-mail Security

When you think about the risks, it’s amazing we let email into our enterprises at all. Then again, just try switching it off…

Every enterprise has to find a balance between security and the ability to carry on conducting business freely. This short guide is about finding that balance.

By following some basic principles, there’s no reason you can’t let legitimate business email move into, out of and within your enterprise while stopping the things that cause damage: viruses, spam, spyware, trojans, phishing, Denial of Service attacks, the loss of sensitive data and the collection of illegal, immoral and just plain offensive material.

There’s no escaping it: the people behind these threats are getting increasingly sophisticated and well-funded. The only real defense is the vigilant application of policy, technology and processes designed to keep email safe and secure.

How to Deal with Laptop Over Heating

A laptop is an extensive investment that requires a great care from your side so that it keeps on running for years. Many laptops (almost 90%) face the problem of overheating. This overheating can cause the laptop to show abnormal behaviour thereby causing the internal machinery to fail. Today we will be discussing the techniques and methods that are available today so that your laptop runs smoothly for many years to come.
laptop over heating
1. Compressed Air: While working with laptop in dusty condition then there are chances that the dust gets deposited on the circulating and cooling vents thereby choking them altogether. This can cause the fan to get over worked as the head will not be dissipated as efficiently. Thus the fan will work at dangerously high temperatures. So in order to avoid this situation buy a can of compressed air from a nearby computer store and it will cost you only some dollars. Take this can and spray it on the vents of your laptop. This will remove all the dust and keep your laptop cool.
2. Power Settings: When we work on the laptop that is on the charging then we set the mode as “High Performance”. This setting will consume the most power and will cause your laptop to overheat. A simple remedy to this problem is to set the laptop in the balanced or power saver mode. This will ensure that your laptop consumes only that amount of power that is required by it. Thus a large amount of heat is saved from generating by avoiding the large speeds of the processor. When the laptop is used for playing games then you should set the mode of your laptop to “High Performance”.
3. Surface: While we are working the laptop then it can be quite comfortable when we place it on the pillow or blanket. But the fact is these surfaces choke the vents of your laptop thereby causing it to overheat. The soft nature of the surface will not allow the heat to escape and thus will be reflected back into the internal machinery. The best surface on which you should keep your laptop is the flat one such as a table. If you want to keep it on some soft surface then you should keep it on some hard cover book or similar surface. This will allow proper flow of air and heat to escape out of the system properly.
4. Powering Off Your Laptop: When you see that you might not be working on your laptop then you must switch it off rather than keeping it on the standby. We would not suggest you “hibernate” option as it will take a toll on your RAM. Powering off your laptop will keep it cool and doesn’t eat away the battery. It is as simple as that.
5. Cooling Pad: You can invest some money on your laptop then you can consider using a cooling pad for your laptop. For about $25 you can get a cooling pad for your laptop and believe me it is every worth of the penny you spend on it.

DIY Shuriken USB Gratifies The Ninja Fanboys

Indeed, the world is full of ninja fanboys. They obsessively watch Naruto and fantasize about embarking on a suicide mission someday for a noble cause–like avenging their sworn enemies.  Ever heard of the shadowy assassin who attacked an Apple store under cover of darkness by ramming his car through the glass plate window? Actually, that’s old (read: stale) news but we were trying to make a point.
Shuriken USB
Yes, points. This shuriken has more than a couple of them. Four pointy edges total and a flash drive. The real attention grabber is what’s seen above is a DIY project. It’s also made of foam cored poster board. That means it’s non lethal and can’t be used on genuine stealth missions. Still, don’t try throwing this around once it’s in your possession. Someone might lose an eye.
Keep in mind, however, that this is not the first Shuriken USB ever made. An earlier Shuriken USB was featured here a couple years back. That was nice too and came in a fancy box, if you ever wanted to gift one.
If you plan on bringing these along when you travel, we suggest not. Remember what happened to Steve Jobs when he tried to bring home shurinkens after a Japan trip? Okay, so that’s being dismissed as an ugly rumor, but knowing Steve he probably did try to bring home a couple.

Is Valve about to release Counter-Strike: Global Offensive? (Updated)

Is Valve about to release Counter-Strike: Global Offensive? (Updated)

Aug. 12, 2011 (1:55 pmBy: Matthew Humphries
UPDATE: It looks as though Valve has now made Counter-Strike: Global Offensive official. It will be available on PC, Mac, PSN, and Xbox Live early next year and will offer new gameplay modes, maps, weapons, and characters to choose from. The development is being handled by Hidden Patch Entertainment under the watchful eye of Valve. At the moment we assume it will be a game you pay for, but Valve could decide to make it free-to-play just like it did with Team Fortress 2 earlier this year. The good news is, we’ll be able to play it at PAX Prime and Eurogamer Expo.
Valve has a lot of successful games on its books, but when it comes to multiplayer gaming, there’s few that come close to the success of Counter-Strike.
Originally introduced in 1999 as a Half-Life mod, it got released the following year as a retail boxed copy, and then received subsequent updates to introduce Condition Zero, and the current latest edition: Counter-Strike: Source.
While Source brought the game up-to-date with Valve’s latest game engine, it remains the same game it was before, but importantly is still very popular. With that in mind, bringing out a new version of the game is a risk, but one fans will no doubt embrace if it is done right. That new game looks to be in the advanced stages of development, and it’s name is Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
Valve has made no official comment on CD:GO yet, but hints have started appearing about its existence. The most obvious of these is the following tweet from Bastian Veiser, product manager for the ESL Pro Series Germany:
Further evidence comes in the form of a forum thread on Steam yesterday where someone thought the new game would be called Counter-Strike: Global Operation. It was soon corrected by Valve employee Cliffe.
It has also been reported that some of the top Counter-Strike players are being invited out to Valve to play the new game and give some feedback. Work on new Counter-Strike maps has also been hinted at by a senior level designer at Valve.
All the evidence points to CS:GO being quite advanced in its development and Valve getting the community involved to make sure it’s playing right and well-balanced. Now all we need to know is when exactly Valve plans to officially announce the game and give it a release date. Got to be soon, right?

Chromebooks can auto-delete user data after 90 days

Chromebooks can auto-delete user data after 90 days

Aug. 12, 2011 (3:22 pmBy: Lee Mathews
Google’s Chromebooks are different from traditional laptops in a number of ways. For starters, they all run the company’s speedy, browser-centric Chrome OS. They’re also tightly integrated with Google’s numerous cloud services like Gmail and Google Docs — and that cloud focus is one reason Chromebooks include solid state drives with comparatively small capacities.
That shouldn’t be a problem, of course, if you’re storing files in the cloud the way Google thinks you should if you’re using a Chromebook. Still, with an in-built media player and photo viewer, there’s a decent chance that you might want to load a movie or two, some music, and some of your favorite photos onto your Samsung Series 5 or Acer AC700. If you do, you’d better make sure that you log into your Chromebook on a regular basis.
Why? Because a recent change in the Chrome OS file manager has introduced a warning that might be a little disconcerting. If your system is running low on free storage space, Chrome OS can automatically delete files to make room.
In the Chrome OS help files it states, “Your browsing data is automatically deleted if your Chromebook is running low on space.” That’s not such a big deal since those files would typically consist of locally cached web page elements like HTML, .JPG, .PNG, and Flash videos. However, Chrome OS will also delete non-owner profiles that have gone unused for three months if space is really tight — and that includes any downloaded files.
Now, chances are good that if you use a Chromebook enough to load files onto its hard drive that you’re probably going to use it more than once a quarter — and if your account is locked in as the owner, your files are safe, too. However, in a business setting this could definitely cause some headaches.
It’s safe to assume that in any enterprise setting where Chromebooks might be rolled out and shared among users, that files are supposed to be stored in the cloud. However, there’s always a user or two that stores something important locally, and those files could wind up getting purged silently during an update if a Chromebook has been shuffled to another user.
Maybe they’ll look into bumping internal storage now that the Chromebooks are already set toreceive a processor bump.

Apple patents reveal antenna clip, fingerprint-free coating, and solar power

Apple patents reveal antenna clip, fingerprint-free coating, and solar power

Aug. 12, 2011 (4:05 pmBy: Jennifer Bergen
Apple had a busy day at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office yesterday as it applied for a number of new patents. Three of the most interesting include more research into solar energy, a fingerprint-free coating for iOS devices, and an antenna clip.
First, Apple is continuing to put efforts into powering its portable devices with solar power. This is the second solar power patent that Apple has won after previously applying for one in January. The new patent is basically just an extension of the first and refers to multiple power sources being used rather than the first which covered voltage conversion for a device.
The second patent focuses on a new finger-oil resistant coating that will keep your iOS devices fingerprint-free. Since oils from your fingers are left on the surface of your touchscreen, it’s often hard to see what’s underneath all the smudges, especially when you’re trying to look at your phone in the sun. Apple is working on an “oleophobic” ingredient that would take the form of a liquid, but would then be vaporized and deposited on the device’s surface. If Apple is actually able to implement this technology, it would be a real game-changer and just another reason to buy an iPhone or an iPad over competitor’s smudged smartphones or tablets.
The third patent looks at an antenna clip for small devices like the iPhone or iPod touch. Some electronic device’s bodies are made of metal, which can be a problem. Take the iPhone 4 for instance. The positioning of the antenna and its metal rim caused the infamous “Death Grip” problem which affected the iPhone’s ability to retain a signal. Metal housing can interfere with radio frequency or other frequency transmissions.
Apple’s solution to this problem is an antenna clip. The clip may look similar to those you see on theiPod shuffle. However, in addition to clipping to your pants pocket, the clip would house an antenna as well as radio frequency transparent material. Apple said in the patent that the antenna clip could be applied to its iPod family, a mobile phone, a radio, and audio/video recorder, a personal digital assistant, a tablet, or other similar devices.
So, will we one day see a solar-powered, smudge-proof iPhone with an antenna clip? Only time will reveal what Apple ends up doing with these patents.

Millennial Media mobile report: What a difference two years makes

Millennial Media mobile report: What a difference two years makes

Aug. 12, 2011 (5:25 pmBy: Russell Holly
It is a little difficult to conceptualize how much the smartphonemarket has grown in just the last two years. We see crazy numbers, such as Android’s 550,000 daily activations and really don’t bat an eye, save to compare it to Apple’s 230,000 iOS activations. To really take stock of this, though, we need something more significant than just numbers. We need to see how the entire world has shifted in acceptance of the smartphone as being far more then just a device for the “business professional”.
To do that, however, we need to see where we were a couple of years ago and compare it to today. Fortunately, advertising giant Millenial Media has stepped up to the plate to offer just that.
top mobile phones of 2011
The Millennial Media S.M.A.R.T. quarterly is much more comprehensive then just smartphone history, but this slide from this presentation earlier this week really caught my eye. In 2009 the iPhone and T-Mobile G1 (the first Android phone) were both just barely starting out, and were surrounded by Windows Mobile, RIM, and a handful of feature phones all pulling for the top spot.. Fast forward just two short years, and not only have the feature phones dropped off the chart entirely, but Android phones dominate more then half of the spots on the list, while the iPhone still remains king as the largest single device.
This is truly a fascinating look at just how much the mobile landscape has changed in such a short amount of time. In that two year span, our phones have jumped from 600MHz processors with 256MB of RAM to 1GHz device with 512MB, and now we’re seeing dual-core processor machines with 1GB of RAM. We’ve seen an unprecedented evolution in technology that has, in many ways, mirrored laptop evolution… only at lightning speed.
Based on this, I wouldn’t even hazard a guess as to where we will be two years from now. The changes have been so significant, and we’re already seeing companies like Nvidia talking about quad-core chips for tablets with the advent of their “Kal-El” project.
Where do you think we will be in two years?

Geek deals: Save on the Dell Precision M4600 mobile workstation

Geek deals: Save on the Dell Precision M4600 mobile workstation

Aug. 12, 2011 (6:16 pmBy: Tim Supples
dell m4600 mobile workstation
Mobile workstations are an exemplary study of engineering. They stuff the latest technology and mounds of features into a chassis not much larger than your “lowly” consumer PC. Often the chassis themselves are designed with more robust materials, great heat dissipation capacity, and of course room for the plethora of ports and expansion cards you’ll usually find in a workstation. HP, Dell, and Lenovo are the biggest players in the mobile workstation market and all are extremely competitive in both the 15-inch and 17-inch form factors.
Dell’s Precision M4600 is a stout contender, with its mil-spec resistance to the elements and aluminum-magnesium alloy chassis. Of course you have the latest Intel Sandy Bridge platform, with Core i5 processors coming standard. A standout spec that you won’t find in consumer notebooks is the inclusion of four DIMM slots, compared to the two one usually gets. This allows for a maximum of 32GB of DDR3 RAM, if you were to spring for the pricey 8GB modules that are now available.
Of course it wouldn’t be a true mobile workstation without some serious graphics horsepower, which is there AMD and NVIDIA come to the rescue. While an AMD FirePro M5950 Mobility Pro 1GB card is standard, right now Dell is offering a free upgrade to NVIDIA’s Quadro 1000M graphics card. Graphics drivers are of course ISV certified, for ultimate reliability and ensuring your rendering software doesn’t crash on hour 3 of 5 in a major render project. Dell also sees fit to offer a premium IPS display, with 100% Adobe color gamut support and 1080p resolution.
Perhaps the final cherry on top of this complicated beast is the standard 3 year onsite warranty Dell includes with all M4600 models. You can snag one with a Core i5 and the free NVIDIA upgrade starting at just $1199 or a well equipped Core i7 model rings up at $1999. These may seem like big numbers, but these machines would put most consumer notebooks to shame and effortlessly power through heavy workloads for years to come.
