Google Launches New Catalog App (video)

If you enjoy browsing through colour catalogs you will be pleased to know that today Google has announced the launch of its new Google Catalog application which is now available to download.
Google’s new Catalog application includes a range digital catalogs that can be browsed on tablet devices and smartphones allowing you to search for products, view videos and even purchased featured products with ease. Google Catalog currently covers a range categories including fashion, beauty, jewellery, home, kids and gifts, with more being add over the coming months. Watch the video after the jump to see Google’s new catalog application in action on the iPad.

What’s a solar flare? NASA explains

There has been a lot of talk about solar flares the past few weeks. For those of you who are not space nerds, the term solar flare may be unfamiliar to you. It sounds like a terrifying phenomenon that would send giant balls of fire hurling down to earth, but that’s not necessarily the case. NASAhas created a handy video putting solar flares into terms anyone can understand and eliminating the paranoia that a ball of fire will rain down on Earth and end all life as we know it.
So, what the heck is a solar flare? NASA says that flares are basically explosions on the surface of the Sun that can last minutes to hours in length. Flares are the result of powerful magnetic fields in and around the sun reconnecting. For the most part, these connections usually happen around active regions where there’s a strong magnetic field. These regions are most often seen as sun spots. Every 11 years, the sun reaches its maximum activity and the solar flares become bigger and more common.
Flares are classified in a similar way to the Richter scale for earthquakes where each letter represents a ten-fold increase in energy output. The smallest flares are B-class, then C, then M, and the largest are classified as X-class. Each letter has a scale of one to nine, so an X9 is an extremely powerful flare, whereas a B1 is not much to write home about. Also an X-class flare is 10 times an M and 100 times a C. Since X9 is technically the largest classification, flares can go above an X9.
Just last week we saw an X6.9-class flare, but the most powerful flare ever to be recorded happened in 2003 and was so powerful that it overloaded the sensors that were measuring it, making it an out-of-category event that had never been seen or experienced before, an X45. The flare wasn’t directly pointed at Earth, but there were some pretty awesome Northern Lights seen a few days later.
A powerful solar flare, like the 2003 flare, can create long-lasting radiation storms. This can harm satellites and can also give anyone flying in a plane near the poles a small dose of radiation. X-flares can also cause worldwide blackouts and can create global transmission problems.
NASA and NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, monitor the Sun and can now see the Sun from every side and from many different wavelengths. This allows scientists to predict space weather events like flares and then warn governments and companies in advance if a solar flare’s radiation may be likely to affect the country.

Mass Effect 3 Gamescom 2011 Squad Leader Trailer (video)

A new trailer has been released at Gamescom this week for the new and upcoming game Mass Effect 3. If you are a fan of the Bioware’s Mass Effect games this new trailer reveals a little of the action you can expect as you lead your team throughout the game. Together with some of the moves you will be able to use. Watch the Gamescom 2011 Squad Leader trailer after the jump.

BioWare is also looking to make combat within the game more challenging, with improved enemy AI to make for more interesting fire fights. Gone are the days when you could huddle into a safe spot and pick your enemies off on at a time.
Mass Effect 3 will be available on March the 6th 2012 for the PC, PS3 and the Xbox 360, with the Xbox 360 version will feature support for the Microsoft Kinect motion controller.

Within the new Battlefield 3 game there will be four classes for you to choose from depending on your style of gameplay: Assault, Support, Engineer and Recon, but unlike previous versions within the newgame, the class, Assault, will now be able to equip defibrillators and medkits, which can be used throughout gameplay.
EA’s Battlefield 3 will be arriving on October 25, 2011 for Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consolesand is available to pre-order now.

Researchers create integrated circuit that doesn’t require a battery

Components that use as little energy as possible are highly desirable for electronics manufacturers and users alike. Ultimately they keep power costs low and allow batteries to last longer in mobile devices.
Even so, gadgets still require some form of power input to function, which until now has been supplied either by a mains connection or an on-board battery that requires regular recharging.
Researchers at the Virginia Commonwleth University have come up with another solution, though: create a circuit that requires such little power all it needs is the ambient energy in an environment to run. In other words, it can run without need of a power lead or battery, relying instead on some energy constant in the environment in which it functions e.g. the human body.
In order to create something that can run on such low, ambient energy, you need to use electronics that require next to no power to function. So instead of the typical charge-based electronic switches used today, the researchers turned to spin transport electronics, more commonly known asspintronics.
Spintronics uses significantly less power as it relies on the spin of electrons to store a 1 or 0. It works in much the same way as a magnet and flipping the spin is what changes the bit from 1 to 0 and vice-versa.
In order for a spintronics solution to be brought up to a usable speed for processing it requires a small voltage. Achieving this without need of a battery is done through a combination of piezoelectric material and a magnetostriction nanomagnet. Piezoelectric materials can accumulate a charge from mechanical stress. That charge can then be transferred to the nanomagnet. Because it is a magnetostriction nanomagnet its shape can change when this charge is applied, and that’s what makes the bit flip possible in the circuit.
The power required in this circuit is so low, typically 0.4 attojoules, the human body, or environments where there is regular movement, provide more than enough juice. In other words, there are lots of potential uses for this circuit in environments where an external power source either isn’t feasible, or a failure of power would be disastrous.
The research and development of the new circuit design was carried out by Kuntal Roy, Supriyo Bandyopadhyay, and Jayasimha Atulasimha at the university. Their paper, entitled “Hybrid spintronics and straintronics: A magnetic technology for ultra low energy computing and signal processing” is available at Applied Physics Letter (registration and payment required).

Well Skype has always got new Foster parents every-time, previously skype has been bought multiples times by different corporates since its establishment in 2003. eBay purchased Skype for $3.1 billion in 2005 and in 2009 they sold the majority of their stake for $1.2 billion less than the original purchase price. In 2010 Skype had $860 million in revenue on which they posted $264 million of operating profit. That still cause them to have a loss of $7 million and apart from that loss, it has $686 million in long-term debt. And, we are now in 2011, when Skype has again got a new home, the purchase of Skype is the biggest ever for Microsoft.
