NASA designs supersonic aircraft with a quiet sonic boom

Supersonic flight is achieved when an aircraft is capable of traveling faster than the speed of sound. It is typically restricted to military aircraft, but we have had a supersonic passenger airliner in the form of the now decommissioned Concorde.
The benefits of supersonic flight come in the form of greatly reduced flight time. Where as a typical 747 can reach speeds of around 550mph, supersonic craft exceed 768mph (the speed of sound). In the case of Concorde, it achieved Mach 2.04, which is 1,350mph. That’s nearly 3x the speed of passenger planes today.
The issue with using supersonic aircraft is the sonic boom they create when breaking the speed of sound. It’s a very loud shockwave that sounds a lot like an explosion, and it’s one of the reasons we don’t see passenger aircraft capable of supersonic flight: no one could stand hearing loud explosions in the sky all day and night.
However, NASA has been working with Boeing and Lockheed Martin to reduce the noise associated with a sonic boom. The aim is to bring it down to a level that would be acceptable for use in business jets. And it seems NASA is on track to achieve that goal.
The ability to lower the sound a sonic boom produces has come about due to improvements in the tools available to model the systems associated with aircraft design. Computational fluid dynamics, the ability to create complex 3D flow perturbations, and the tools to optimize the designs of both engine systems and aerodynamics in the lab have allowed NASA to experiment more freely and figure out the problems.
Using scale models of new craft produced by Boeing and Lockheed Martin, NASA has reduced the boom to 79 decibels. To put that in context, Concorde was 25 decibels louder than that, and the expected “level of acceptance” by the general public is 70 decibels.
NASA’s plan is to have business jets in service by 2025 using its current design, and it is confident further development will bring the noise level down to that 70 decibels threshold. Reaching that will likely take a further decade though, and arrive in aircraft by 2035.
Scaling this up to larger passenger aircraft will require further design work, but whatever the final design is for this new class of supersonic business jet should aid in the design of larger, supersonic aircraft. One day we could all be jetting off on holiday at Mach 2, but it probably won’t be as fun asriding in an F18.

Free Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut DLC Coming This Summer

Short of playing the new content itself, we’ve finally reached the end of the Mass Effect 3 ending debacle. Bioware already announced they will be releasing ending DLC for Mass Effect 3, but now we know some details. It’s called Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut, it’s coming this summerto the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC and it will be free. It will not change the much derided Mass Effect 3 ending, but it will fix the much derided lack of closure by including epilogues and additional cinematics designed to make your story’s ending feel more personalized. Who knows if it’ll work, but it’s a start.
Of course, as a gamer who was not a fan of the original Mass Effect 3 ending, I’m glad that I’ll be getting some additional content to flesh it out and also glad that the additional content will be free. On the other hand, as a gamer in general and someone who tries to respect artistic vision, I’m downright terrified of the precedent being set here. Sure, it feels good to get free DLC now, but Bioware has essentially come out and said that sufficient consumer pressure will make them cave and create additional content for a game, but not only that: They will also release said content for free. I mean, in this case the ending of the game in question was pretty poor, but if gamers start trying to hold other developers hostage with increasingly loud criticism of increasingly minor details, you can see how the industry would be worse off for it.
In any event, we haven’t slipped down that slope quite yet and what we have to look forward to now is the hope that the Mass Effect 3 endings can be salvaged a bit. Hopefully Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut is effective, because even if it’s free, the precedent might cost the industry a lot.
A statement on the subject from Bioware co-founder Dr. Ray Muzyka:
“We are all incredibly proud of ‘Mass Effect 3′ and the work done by Casey Hudson and team. Since launch, we have had time to listen to the feedback from our most passionate fans and we are responding. With the ‘Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut’ we think we have struck a good balance in delivering the answers players are looking for while maintaining the team’s artistic vision for the end of this story arc in the ‘Mass Effect’ universe.”

YouTube Auto Converting Uploaded Short 1080p Movies To 3D

Today YouTube is expanding their 3D service to now include any short videos that are uploaded. So rather than having to click a button to convert your short movie into 3D. YouTube will now automatically convert 1080p short movies directly to 3D as they are uploaded.
YouTube 3D
The new service will make it easier for YouTube users to now view movies in 3D by simply clicking on the “Gear” icon within the YouTube player to view it in glorious 3D. But don’t forget you will need to be wearing a pair of 3D glasses. YouTube explains:
To give you more dimension on 3D, here’s some background how the conversion technology works at YouTube. Since last September we’ve been constantly improving the underlying technology, which now uses several techniques:
We use a combination of video characteristics such as color, spatial layout and motion to estimate a depth map for each frame of a monoscopic video sequence. We use machine learning from the growing number of true 3D videos on YouTube to learn video depth characteristics and apply them in depth estimation. The generated depth map and the original monoscopic frame create a stereo 3D left-right pair, that a stereo display system needs to display a video as 3D

What Google Would Have Looked Like in the 1980s

Facebook in the 90s really wasn't so bad, nor was the 80s version of Twitter, but trying to Google something with dial-up internet and through BBS just might be what some geeks have always dreamed about. Yes, the "I'm Feeling Lucky" feature has been retained. Continue reading for a video demonstration.

EA voted Worst Company in America

EA Golden Poo
It’s been a big, big year for game publisher Electronic Arts. The launch of the Origin game service,Battlefield 3Mass Effect 3, and now it has won a very prestigious award. Your friend and mine, EA has won the annual Worst Company in America award from the Consumer Union’s Consumerist blog. EA is now the proud owner of the iconic Golden Poo trophy.
Each year, the Consumerist pits all the most hated big companies in the US against each other in a capitalist version of the March Madness brackets. This year there were 32 firms to start with, but slowly the matches pared things down. Walmart beat out Gamestop, AT&T took out Facebook, and Bank of America silenced Ticketmaster. In the final battle of Bank of America versus EA, Electronic Arts took an incredible, record breaking 64% of the vote. This victory is made all the sweeter by the fact that this was EA’s first year on the list.
The last year has brought the situation with EA into stark focus for many gamer. The gaming monolith continues to gobble up smaller, more innovative companies. If you ask the fans, they’ll tell you that things are never quite the same for those game studios after being bought (case in point,Bioware). Angry gamers also cite EA’s increasing reliance on downloadable content as a money making venture in top games.
There have also been multiple reports of shady business practices like manipulating media coverage with viral marketers posing as real users. Employees too seem to be getting trolled; EA has famously miserable working conditions where employees are badly overworked. As legitimate as that concern is, I imagine it had less to do with the win than anger over the ending of Mass Effect 3 did.
When word got back to EA about the award, the PR machine fired off a quick response. ”We’re sure that bank presidents, oil, tobacco and weapons companies are all relieved they weren’t on the list this year. Reference was also made to creating award winning games and serving 300 million gamers.
The Consumerist will be attempting to deliver the traditional Golden Poo trophy to EA soon. Congrats, guys. You really did it.
