Apple’s Smart Cover can unlock a passcode-protected iPad 2 running iOS 5
iOS 5 might be getting its first patch rushed out after a major security oversight has been discovered relating to its use on the iPad 2.
It turns out that just by attaching a Smart Cover to an iPad 2 you can bypass the passcode protection screen and unlock the device. It doesn’t give you full access to iOS, but you can view and use any apps that were left open when it was locked, e.g. the Safari web browser.
If you have an iPad 2 and a Smart Cover to hand it’s easy to see this security flaw in action. Just lock your iPad 2, then hold down the power button to bring up the screen that allows you to swipe to turn off the device. Instead of doing that, attach the Smart Cover, open it, then tap Cancel. Magically you will have access to the iPad 2 interface again.
If this causes you concern, it is possible to stop the passcode being bypassed until Apple issues a fix by disabling Smart Cover unlocking in settings. As to when it will be fixed, I doubt Apple will wait long to roll out a patch as it is a bit of an embarrassing oversight on their part.
This isn’t the first security issue Apple has experienced since rolling out iOS 5. On the brand newiPhone 4S it has been discovered you can use Siri when a device is locked. Even if a passcode is required, Siri doesn’t care and allows you to carry out functions such as sending email and text messages.

PS3 jailbreak made possible using dongle and v3.55 firmware
It looks like Sony has another hacker to track down. A video has appeared on YouTube of a newjailbreak for the PS3 that requires a dongle to function.
The jailbreak solution is called JB2, short for Jailbreak 2, and was apparently found being sold as an initial test run in Indonesia. It requires a PS3 that has the v3.55 firmware installed, and just requires you insert the JB2 dongle before switching on the console. After an extended boot up process, it’s possible to run pirated games from a Blu-ray disc or the hard drive.
Which games run from the hard drive depends on their age. If they were released before v3.60 of the PS3 firmware then they can be installed. Any game released after that needs to be put on a Blu-ray disc in order to be recognized and run.
To get the games to work from disc a special “JB2 design” game disc format has to be used when burning. If you have PS3 game ROMs, the dongle, and the ability to burn Blu-ray discs then a number of games have already been confirmed as working. Those titles include Driver: San Francisco, FIFA 2012, God of War: Origins, PES 2012, Sniper: Ghost Warrior, and X-Men Destiny.Resistance 3, Disgaea 4, and Batman: Arkham Asylum are also thought to be compatible with the list growing all the time.
Several images of what are thought to be the dongles have also been posted online. They cost around $50 each and have a distinctive blue design down the side of the stick and the cases they come in.
If this turns out to be real, which it looks to be, then don’t expect it to take long for the dongles to spread further afield than Indonesia. I’m also wondering if the JB2 solution will be offered as a download you can put on any USB stick. That would certainly make for easier distribution and therefore cash in countries Sony could block the dongles being sold imported into and sold.

XtremeMac has unveiled another new charging stand for just about anything Apple. If the Apple product has the charge and sync port on the bottom like the iPad and iPhone, this stand will charge it. It workswith the iPod touch, iPhone 4, 4S, iPad, and more.

Apple wants a German cafe to stop using this logo
According to owners of a small German café, Apple has sent a cease and desist letter over the use of the above logo. Apfelkind, which is German for “apple baby,” is a family-oriented coffee and tea house that opened this April in the city of Bonn.
The owner of Apfelkind, Christin Römer, registered the logo with the fashion and service industry in Munich this June. In the letter from Apple’s lawyers, they claimed that the logo could cause confusion with Apple’s global brand.
The café’ (below) is advertised as an establishment for “children, coffee, and cake.” Its website describes it as a place where parents can relax over a cup of coffee, while their children are occupied in a playroom that features painting. Their menu contains several apple-laden snacks and beverages, such as apples with red cocoa cream, sugar apples, and apple blossom tea.
Apple’s attorneys will likely argue that, even if this café’s owner has no intention of capitalizing off of their success, letting it slide could establish precedence for other (blatant and intentional) infringement of the Apple logo.
Whatever Apple’s reasons are for pursuing this matter, it’s a far cry from incidents like those fake Apple stores in China. One has to wonder if this could be a P.R. disaster for the company, if a story like this were to blow up. The majority of the public doesn’t view Apple as tyrants who bully small business owners into submission, but more people may start to think that if they hear about cases like this.
Römer says that she filed a legal letter with Apple, disputing the claim that her logo causes any confusion. She has not decided whether to voluntarily change the logo yet.

I suppose you could wait and see if the Nokia Windows Phone is going to be amazing, or if the gargantuan Galaxy Nexus is the Android phone that finally gets creature comforts correct. But I don't think they'll be better than the iPhone 4S, not really, though they may come very, very close, closer than anything's come before, like an asymptote. - New Orange Bird! The Orange Bird is unlocked on level 1-4. He’s a tiny little guy, about the size of the blue bird, but he’s hiding a “big” secret. You can trigger him to MASSIVELY inflate at any point in-flight or about 2-seconds after contact, after that he will auto-inflate. No he doesn’t explode, but rather he hangs out for a bit before he deflates and flies off. Awesome! He does seem to slice through wood pretty well.
- Seasons episodes are now broken down in two categories: 2011 and 2012
- 30 new levels all themed for a slightly darker Halloween
- One hidden Golden Egg and a bonus “Big Black Pumpkin” Golden Egg level
- 6 new achievements, which are currently available on iOS only
- Bright Side of the Moon achievement bug has been fix, but you may have to re-defeat levels 1-15 and/or 2-15.
- Seasons Greeding 1-16 feather threshold is lowered. Congrats to those who got their badge before the threshold was changed!

New PlayStation 3 Hack Emerging?
Not to worry though, it’s not the “steal your credit card number” kind, it’s more along the lines of facilitating the running of games from burned Blu-Ray disks. Details are scarce at the moment, but apparently the hack known as “JB2″ works, just like earlier attempts by using a USB dongle to bypass security when booting up a console.
There are signs that this may be no more than the previous 3.55 firmware hack in new clothing, so PSN is still out if you plan on flying the jolly roger, though the fact that it only offers a way to play burned Blu-Ray disks instead of booting them from the hard drive may give the cost-conscious pirate pause.

Steve Jobs Was Ready For ‘Thermonuclear Wars’ With Google Over Android
Steve Jobs’s biography, which has been written by Walter Isaacson, will be published on Monday, and it would appear that the Associated Press has already managed to get their hands of a copy of the book, which will be called ‘Steve Jobs’.
One of the things revealed in the book is just how upset Steve Jobs was with Google over their Android OS, which you can see below and it makes for interesting reading.
“I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple’s $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong,” Jobs said. “I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product. I’m willing to go thermonuclear war on this.”
Jobs used an expletive to describe Android and Google Docs, Google’s Internet-based word processing program. In a subsequent meeting with Schmidt at a Palo Alto, Calif., cafe, Jobs told Schmidt that he wasn’t interested in settling the lawsuit, the book says.
“I don’t want your money. If you offer me $5 billion, I won’t want it. I’ve got plenty of money. I want you to stop using our ideas in Android, that’s all I want.”
