Windows 8 to bring drastically reduced boot times

No one wants to sit around and twiddle their thumbs waiting for a PC to boot, and with Windows 8you won’t have to, according to Microsoft.
In a new post on the Building Windows 8 blog, the company shows off Windows 8′s fast startup mode, which has been optimized to fully utilize the multi-core processors found in nearly all modern computers. Fast startups also taps into the Windows hibernation file to trim boot times — by storing Windows kernel session data there (but not your user session as it does when you fully hibernate a system).
Windows 8 also saves time by not completely enumerating all of a system’s drivers every time it boots. Microsoft does point out that the fast startup process still allows users to “freshen up” drivers and devices. While Windows 8 showed reduced startup times across the board on Microsoft’s 30-system test, the improvements are greatest on systems with solid-state drives and those that utilize UEFI instead of BIOS during the POST process.
Want to see fast startup in action? Check out the Microsoft video below to get an idea just how fast Windows 8 can boot on a quality laptop. In this case, it’s an HP EliteBook 8640p — with an Intel Core i7-2620M, 8GB of RAM, and a 160GB SSD.
You can clearly see that the demo laptop boots to the Metro-style Windows 8 interface — but Steven Sinofsky was quick to point out in the comments that startup times are identical for both the traditional Windows desktop and the tiled start page.

Apple wins, Samsung can’t sell the Galaxy Tab in Germany

Apple has been trying everything it can to get rival tablets banned. Any device the company believes copies the design of the iPad in any way usually results in a lawsuit being filed. In Germany at the beginning of August, Apple took a different approach to halting sales of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab. Instead of filing a patent lawsuit the company filed an industrial design right infringement.
The so-called Community design is specific to Europe and covers the design of a device rather than specific hardware or software features. At the time, the German court accepted the complaint and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was banned from sale across Europe (with thee exception of the Netherlands). Later on the ban was reduced just to within Germany.
Now, the ruling on the Community design infringement has been upheld meaning the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is permanently banned in Germany. That means you can’t buy one in Germany and Samsung Germany cannot sell any units in other countries. That second point is a minor issue as Samsung can use other arms of its business to continue selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1 elsewhere.
Samsung obviously intends to appeal the decision and points out such a ruling “restricts design innovation and progress.”
The worry now for Samsung and other Apple competitors is that if this ruling does stand it sets a precedent for other cases. However, with Google’s recent acquisition of Motorola and sale of useful patents to companies such as HTC, these lawsuits may start ending up in cross-licensing agreements rather than product bans before long.

Crysis is heading to PS3, Xbox 360 in remastered form

When Crysis 2 saw a release in March this year it was a big launch for developer Crytek. Not only did the game use the new CryEngine 3, but it was the first time the series had made it on to consoles. That decision was rewarded with high review scores across all three versions (PC, PS3, Xbox 360).
If playing that game on Xbox 360 or PS3 made you a fan of the series, Crytek has some good news for you. Next month, the original 2007 PC-only Crysis is set to be released for both consoles as a digital download.
The good news is, Crytek isn’t just re-releasing the game. They have taken the time to remaster it with all new lighting and the Nanosuit effects and controls have had a major update. There’s also thought to be support for 3D. It is even being suggested that the release of Crysis 2 may have actually made the release of the original possible on consoles.
CryEngine 3 already works with the PS3 and 360, so moving the Crysis game assets over may have been a relatively simple task. Then add in the fact the new engine would have better lighting and effects available, and you can see how a remastered version made a lot of sense.
If you want to play the game you’ll have to find 1600 Microsoft points or $19.99 next month. In return you’ll get a very solid FPS experience that any fan of the genre should add to their collection.
If you want to see the remastered game in action, check out the video below and jump ahead to the 19 minute mark:
