Mozilla Paladin project is developing Gladius, a 3D game engine for web browsers

With the advent of HTML5 and WebGL, the move away from Adobe Flash and instead pumping out interactive entertainment directly in the browser has begun. We’ve already got HTML5 video, multiple 2D game engines are appearing that output to HTML5 and Canvas, and 3D is also making big gains pushed forward by several engines alongside Adobe’s latest 3D push. Now Mozilla is getting in on the act, and has decided to work on its very own 3D browser engine called Gladius.
Gladius is actually just part of a wider project called Paladin, which has the aim of pushing 3D gaming on the web and in the browser. They say that doing and experimenting is the best way to learn, and that’s exactly what Mozilla has decided to do for Gladius.
The Paladin team have been working on a game called RescueFox that was originally planned out using an existing 3D engine called CubicVR.js. But that soon proved inadequate, so Mozilla created its own 3D engine called Gladius, which builds on CubicVR.
The end result is a rather basic, but still playable game. Mozilla readily admits this is a prototype that will be taken no further. The purpose it served was to prove how well Gladius was working, and now the Paladin team have gone back to the drawing board to develop Gladius further.
In RescueFox you are an astronaut floating in space who must use the surrounding asteroids to navigate to your fox before her air runs out. It’s simply a case of clicking asteroids to be beamed there, and you can play it in your browser right now.
Although basic, it’s a good start, and one that shows Firefox is highly capable of doing 3D. With a few more months of refinement I’m sure we will be seeing a prototype game with a lot more going on and looking like it was made with a commercial 3D engine.

Facebook In Big Trouble For User Tracking

The picture below probably captures best Mark Zuckerberg’s complete and total joy knowing he has the lives of millions in his hands. Not literally though, but on Fcebook. This week, angry Facebook users from Illinois filed a lawsuit against the friending titan over alleged tracking. What makes the charges so controversial is the tracking took place after the users had logged out. Uh oh.
Mark Zuckerberg smiling

This stink got a head start a short while ago after a savvy Australian blogger exposed the practice. Apparently, Facebook keeps tab on its users by implanting cookies. Since then, a minor firestorm has spread to different corners of the world, with grave repercussions.
That’s certainly not the end of Facebook’s legal troubles though. The preeminent social networking is being attacked from either side of the Atlantic, be it US lawmakers or the Irish data protection commissioners.
It hardly comes as a surprise though, since hundreds of millions have now willingly surrendered so much data on FB it’s a veritable goldmine for advertisers. There used to be a time when the general public feared governments for keeping tab on them. Today, it’s Facebook whose acting like an eerily malevolent Big Brother. Dystopia is scary.

Weird Flying Carpet Experiment Makes The Magic Real (Video)

The truth is it’s not exactly a carpet that’s floating around a lab at Princeton. More like a plastic sheet that has an electric current running through it. The creation of a grad student inspired by a paper he read by some MIT prof, the footage of the experiment has since gone viral. Innovation at its best, ladies and gentlemen. Below is a fantasy stock image of a flying carpet, because the real footage (after the jump!)  looks awful.
Magic Carpet
It took graduate student Noah Jafferis two years and a lot of painstaking labor to finally get his sheet to, uh, hover. To what end? Vindicating some paper he read that was authored by an MIT prof. Of course, when the prof heard about Jafferis’ work, he was mighty proud.
The ‘carpet’ is actually a thin plastic sheet and if it does prove useful in any applications, it could make an impact on VTOL technology. Quite exciting, since the tech on a Harrier’s VTOL isn’t really as hot these days.

There was a karate master who used to fight bulls with his bare hands.

Masutatsu Oyama was the founder of Kyokushin, a style of karate practiced by people like Sean Connery and Dolph Lundgren. In the 1950s, Oyama used to demonstrate his power by fighting bulls. He fought and killed 52 bulls using just martial arts, often by first chopping the bulls’ horns off with karate chops. Though he did nearly get killed himself, and once had to be hospitalized for 6 months, he got really good at fighting bulls. Three of them he was able to kill instantly. He also earned the title of “the Godhand” because he could knock out most of his (human) opponents with just one punch!

Appear Offline to Some of Your Friends on Facebook Chat
There might be the case when you don’t wish to chat with few peoples or in other words you want to chat with the selected one. If you get frustrated with the disturbance caused by these “No to Chat” people, in that case, Facebook provides you with the nice facility which enables you to choose the people with whom you don’t want to chat.
It’s a hidden feature which can be enabled by following these steps:
Step 1: Open your account on Facebook.
Step 2: Click on the “Chat” option which is present on the lower right side of your profile.
Step 3: There you will find two options. Choose “Friend List”.
Step 4: There you will find an option of creating a new list. Name it, for example, “Blacklisted”.
Step 6: Now, select or write the names of the people with whom you don’t want to chat.
Step 7: Set the status as offline for this chosen list.

Wikipedia has banned the Church of Scientology from editing any of its articles!

The ban centered itself around over 400 articles about the controversial religion which had been subject to a series of long-standing and heated edit wars. The conflict was between numerous editors from the church itself who methodically used multiple user accounts to deceptively silence Scientology critics who had been citing their own source materials. Though Wikipedia prides itself on being open and inclusive, enough was enough - and many of the users involved were banned on an individual basis for six months!

Apples produce a gas that can be used to ripen other fruits.

Apples produce a gas that can be used to ripen other fruits.

As fruits such as apples and pears age, they emit an odorless gas called ethylene. This substance is responsible for many of the changes that come with ripening in some fruits, such as color change and an overall softening. This effect is used as an advantage for commercial growers, who use ethylene to ripen fruits such as bananas, pears, and tomatoes once they have been harvested.
Unfortunately, this ‘fruit aging hormone’ can also cause serious damage in many plants, depending on their age and susceptibility to the gas. This can leave some vegetation severely crippled and may even lead to death! However, fruits such as cherries and blueberries are not affected at all by ethylene gas, so this effect greatly varies depending on the type of plant involved.
