Drop tests for tablets are pretty pointless in my view. The fact is, if you drop any brand of tablet on to a hard floor from waist height face-down, you should expect it to break. And guess what? That’s exactly what happens with the new iPad. And it’s what we already knew happens to the iPad 2.

The only difference seems to be the new iPad suffers more damage to its Retina Display. That’s probably going to be due to the extra weight being carried by the tablet. It’s only 51 grams heavier, but we are talking about glass hitting a stone floor in the video above.

The only good news that can be garnered from these drop tests is the fact dropping your iPad with the screen facing up probably means it is going to survive. How long it continues to work afterwards is down to how well the components inside are held together. Going on how difficult iFixit found it todisassemble the new iPad, I think the internals will be fine after such an impact.

What would be more useful is drop comparisons of the different cases that are available for the iPad. Can anything beat the G-Form iPad case that survives being hit with a bowling ball and a 60-foot drop?

With the new iPad in such high demand at the moment, I hope no one else chooses to squander their Apple tablet on video. Anyone thinking about doing this should probably just give the iPad to someone who really wants one and will make good use of it.
