Google Chrome 15 finally gets a bookmarks menu

Ages ago, Google Chrome had a command line flag that allowed users to enable a drop-down bookmarks menu. It’s a feature that power users loved, since it provided quick access to favorite sites without having to display the bookmarks bar and eat up extra vertical pixels.
But Google later backtracked and removed the toggle — not necessarily a huge problem since several extensions are available that provide similar functionality, but all of those chew up a little bit of RAM. The menu was, for all intents and purposes, footprint-free.
Now the bookmarks menu appears to be on its way back to Google Chrome. This time it’s not even hidden behind a flag. Rather, it’s integrated into the wrench menu just below the new tab and window options. Hover over bookmarks and your toolbar’s contents slide into view. You can then pause on subfolders to drill down and click a link to open it in the current tab.
It’s a subtle change, but one that will be very handy on smaller screen devices like the first round ofChromebooks. Like another feature that surfaced recently, tab sync, it’s one more tweak that brings Chrome functionality in line with other browsers like Opera and Firefox. That’s not to say Chrome isn’t advanced and modern, because it most certainly is both those things. It’s just that there are still plenty of little tweaks like these that Google will be making so that detractors can’t say “My browser can do this, but Chrome can’t.”

Did Apple Just Patent’s Microsoft’s Xbox Kinect?

Apple has recently been granted a range of new patents, one of those is for a 3D display and imaging system, which seems very similar to Microsoft’s Xbox Kinect, and the system described by apple would use a projector with a scanning beam that pick up your movements via a receiver.
Apple’s patent differs from Microsoft’s Kinect slightly, in that the projector of the system could also be used to show holographic imagery.
Apple Patent
To be effective, it is also important that such devices be capable, when desired or necessary, of economically but effectively and precisely providing feedback to the user. Thus, such devices should incorporate audio and/or visual mechanisms for reporting to the user the effects and results of the 3D input.
As Gizmodo points out, with this new patent Apple could end up getting some sort of licensing fee from Microsoft.

Singapore man jailed for registering a .xxx domain

The .xxx domain has taken a long and winding road to approval. It has been trying to become officialsince 2005, and finally achieved official approval by ICANN in March this year. However, in Singapore, where Internet usage is tightly monitored and restricted, official approval seems to mean very little. Jiaming Sim, who tried to defend his own trademark by buying a .xxx domain during the Sunrise Period, was swiftly arrested (four hours after performing the registration) by Singapore police for doing so.
The Sunrise Period refers to a period of time after the launch of a new top-level domain when owners of trademarks can register a domain name to protect their mark from abuse and domain sitters. Sim, who’s famous all over Singapore for producing a papaya and tomato pulp, tried to buy the .xxx domain to protect his company’s interests. According to his lawyer, Pnob Chang, Sim bought the domain so no competitors would post vulgar content under his name.
Chang said that the Internet Crime Police in Singapore are very strict and monitor traffic to adult websites. Sim was arrested by a “sizable police force” that entered his apartment, confiscated his computer equipment, and broke a couple of teeth and four ribs as well. Clearly, someone has a big issue with the .xxx domain, or the potential it offers for a glut of new adult content in Singapore.
Sim is currently being kept in a maximum security prison in Bukit Panjan, and Chang said they’ll file a motion to release Sim in the coming weeks.
Countries like China and India block or restrict access to the .xxx domains, and many religious groups here in the U.S. had lobbied against the creation of a domain for adult content. Still, ICM Registry, the company behind .xxx still was able to get the domain to be approved.
