Not really surprising, as whole revolutions that topple governments transpire over social media. Whether this revelation is exciting or a whole new level of Big Brother voyeurism is really up to the reader. This week, Kimberly Dozier of the Associated Press reported on a secret CIA facility in Virginia whose sole purpose is to sift through social networking.

By ‘sift’ is meant poring over millions of tweets and keeping tab on Facebook while collecting newspapers, magazine, etc. The whole point is to harvest vast amounts of information and create models that can assess the political climate of entire countries.
According to the report, the hundreds of analysts and hackers who are involved in the program were able to anticipate this year’s revolution in Egypt. Other flare ups across the globe are also closely monitored, like civil unrest in Iran or Thailand, for example. What they gather is eventually distilled into an intelligence report that’s presented to President Obama on a daily basis.
The funny part is this kind of revelation will further inflame the fringe paranoiacs who are passionately vocal about social media being an intelligence tool. As far back as 2008 a few journalists were already ringing the alarm bells, one of them going so far as to name names.

It’s been common knowledge these days that China has a monopoly on rare earth minerals. Sure, other parts of the world might have vast deposits, but when it comes to production, no one comes close to beating China. This kind of geopolitical-economic clout is now being used to good, if worrying, effect. News has just broken that China will not export any rare earth minerals for a whole month. In the board rooms of the world’s largest electronic companies, a lot of people are probably wincing right now.

What makes this so astounding is the state-controlled rare earth production conglomerate Inner Mongolia Baotou Steel Rare Earth Group has expressed its intentions in plain language. Simply put, by halting its production and export for a month prices are going to inflate, plain and simple.
The real head scratcher is what’s motivating this kind of blatant power play. Some analysts and journalists think that China is being strategically selfish. There’s a hint of magnet production for its own domestic industries that are rare earth intensive.
The implications of such moves, however, are scary. If this kind of reckless behavior becomes the norm then our world has entered a new era of competition where not countries, but whole industries go head to head on a massive scale.

If anyone was hoping that motherboards would finally get a nice-looking BIOS, Gigabyte is about to make this dream come true.

Sure, it will start off on enthusiast motherboards, even though it is made in such a way as to be more comprehensive to entry-level and mainstream users, but it will land in all Gigabyte UEFI motherboards eventually.

Dubbed 3D BIOS, it has an isometric view of the motherboard and lets users easily access component settings through use of the mouse.

All it takes is to hover the cursor over an area and it will become highlighted (Gigabyte even threw in pop-up 'bubbles' with helpful info).

All in all, it makes the BIOS much more approachable and even fun to play in for a while.

Gigabyte will manufacture its platforms with Dual UEFI BIOS implementation (both 3D BIOS and an advanced BIOS mode will be available).
