Over a Million Total Android and iPhone Apps Launched

A report has surfaced from Appsfire that claims that since the Android OS and iPhone launched there have been a total of a million apps for both platforms combined launched onto the market. There are a few caveats for these numbers though.
1 Million Apps

First, the apps that are on both platforms were countered twice. The second is that apparently only 80% of those apps are still active today. With the majority of them, likely to be duplicates and stuff that no one really wants the amount of usable apps that people actually download is likely much smaller than that 800,000 number.
The split of apps gives Android 48% of the total number launches. iOS is a bit higher at 52% of the apps ever launched. It’s interesting that the iPhone has been around a lot longer so Android is coming on strong.

Windows to Go shown off, Windows 8 running from a USB flash drive

Windows 8 is going to bring a truckload of new features when it arrives next year. While the Metrostart screen and ARM support are getting a lot of the attention so far, one feature power users are sure to dig is Windows to Go.
Throughout the demonstration at Build, Microsoft’s Steve Silverberg underscored the fact that Windows to Go was designed with enterprise use in mind. That means you probably won’t find the feature enabled on consumer SKUs of Windows 8 like Home Premium or Professional (assuming they’re still called that).
In essence, Windows to Go gives IT administrators a way to let their users “take home” a corporate computer. The “system” is configured just like any other Windows 8 system on the network will be. Even on a humble USB 2.0 port (albeit with an 8-channel Super Talent flash drive), Windows to Go performs very well during the demo — so just imagine how it’ll run off newer flash drives that incorporate USB 3.0 and SSD technology.
Designed for use on flash drives with capacities of 32GB or more, Windows to Go takes your whole Windows 8 desktop — apps and all — and shoves it into a portable package. When you insert the Windows to Go drive into another Windows 7 or Windows 8 system, it boots up and hides any system drives that might be present. They’ll still show in the Disk Management app, but no drive letters will be assigned (apart from C: to the flash drive).
That keeps personal data and corporate data – or your data and your roommate’s data – totally separate. Silverberg did mention sharing one machine with a spouse — and with features and SKUs still up in the air, that could mean we’ll all be able to take advantage of Windows to Go on non-enterprise versions of Windows 8 too.
And yes, in the picture posted to one of Microsoft’s own blogs that’s a MacBook Air running Windows 8 — presumably off of one of the Build Super Talent drives using Windows to Go.

Space 3 Concept Phone Is Totally Unbelievable

Take your average touchscreen, multiply it, then combine both screens into one phone. The designers didn’t bother with the engineering part, however, so their concept has to be taken on blind faith that it’s awesome.
According to the available concept illustrations, each touchscreen are independent wireless devices that can be separated or opened like a book. Wenhing Chou and Kok Keong Wong might be onto something.
Space 3 phone
Blessed with so-called twin-splitting transparent displays, the Space 3 phone has no specifications or features worth mentioning. It’s a concept, remember?
This is the reason why design remains an appealing career. Designers aren’t often put to task for their creation’s lack of engineering. The results are sometimes startling, sometimes ludicrous to a hilarious degree.
To bother trying to make the Space 3 phone more tangible, imagine if the R&D for producing such a gadget went full throttle and what came out was a highly modular handheld PC with phone features plus a few extras. Think video game console, ultimate hacking device, credit card, and ebook reader. That’s the genius behind concepts, they can be everything at once.
Here’s to hoping a few of the ideas inspird by the Space 3 do see the light of day.

The man who discovered the 3D visual effect couldn't even see it because he was blind in one eye.

Dr. Carl Pulfrich was an early pioneer in the design of sterescopes, images that appear to be three-dimensional that are composed of two separate two-dimensional images. (like a View-Master toy). He’s well-known for observing and documenting what is now known as the “Pulfrich effect”.

The Pulfrich effect is the illusion of depth created by our brains when viewing an object with a dark filter applied to one eye. This effect is the basis behind the 3-D movies that we can see today in theaters.

In Pulfrich’s own words: “I have never been able to observe these effects myself, for I have been blind in the left eye for 16 years.”

Here Comes The Zombie Virus! Scientists Turn Inorganic Matter Into Living Organism

The entire Resident Evil film franchise should probably be blamed for this catastrophe in the making. Might as well spread the guilt and include the TV adaptation of The Living Dead and a few rather zombie-filled first person shooters. But wait, wait, this isn’t exactly a zombie virus as depicted in movies (at least not yet). At the moment it’s quite the breakthrough. Revolutionary stuff!
Inorganic Cell
But relax, as usual our paranoia is getting the better of us. The research being undertaken at the University of Glasgow is actually 100% benign. All it seeks to accomplish is a viable process of “engineering” inorganic cells to conduct chemical processes. In short, make non-carbon based cells act like carbon-based cellular life forms. Impossible? Professor Cronin thinks otherwise. In fact, he has already spoken about his research in Edinburgh during a TED Global conference.
The goal isn’t so much to allow scientists god-like powers over life and death, but to finally get the theory of evolution moving in the right direction. This is accomplished by creating chemical processes involving membranes among inorganic cells. It’s real brainy stuff that could revitalize science’s eternal quest for the true origins of not only our species, but life in the universe. If there’s life in the universe.
