In the eternal war of who makes the better thing (regardless of whatever that thing may be), it is occasionally nice to see something pop up that everyone can appreciate. Such is the case withBrowser Quest, and HTML5 game made by Mozilla and Little Workshop.
Browser Quest showcases the best of HTML5 in an online multiplayer game that anybody with an HTML5-friendly browser on a PC, Mac, Linux, Android or iOS can play. If you are interested in some pixel art fun filled with some of the internet’s greatest hits, it is well worth an hour of your time.
Browser Quest starts you off as a generic male character in a small village. As you explore, you discover weapons and armor that increase in strength right alongside the power of the baddies you find in those areas. You will find everything from town guards with HTML5 shields to a Nyan Cat nestled in the bushes. As you defeat enemies, explore caves, and talk to NPC’s you’ll unlock some of the 20 achievements that are available for you to aim for.
You’re not alone, either, and there’s a basic chat system that will allow you to communicate with the other players you can see on your screen. The other players can help you attack the baddies, but they can also drop in and steal your loot if you aren’t fast enough.
With all of this awesomeness going on, there’s still a little room for self-promotion. Randomly available at any point in the game are “foxy” potions, which make your character invulnerable to damage for about 15 seconds. During that time, your armor is replaced with a firefox costume for everyone to see. By the time you reach the final boss you are appropriately prepared to take him on by yourself, but typically you’re not alone in taking him on. When you have defeated the boss, you can still go around unlocking the rest of the achievements you find.
This is an impressive undertaking, made even more so by the transparency Mozilla offers. The game is entirely open source and available on Github, and you can even take a look at the server load the game is under. The game is functional on Phones, Tablets, and PC’s, but the phone experience even on a Galaxy Nexus with Chrome for Android is fairly uncomfortable.
